Royal recycling: what happens to Máxima’s old clothes?

Our queen has an overflowing wardrobe that you can’t believe.

In the past, it was not done for celebs and royals to appear multiple times in the same outfit. But today things are very different. This is what happens to the garments that our Queen Máxima wears during her endless royal duties.

Impressive wardrobe

Anyway, HKH has an impressive wardrobe, let’s put that first. And it has to be, because from business appointments to state banquets and from family photos to UN speeches: Máxima is very busy! And when Máx comes home from such a royal appointment, what happens to her Natan gowns or Max Mara blazers?

A trip through the washing machine is not an option for many of the custom pieces, but make no mistake: a good cleaning is of course necessary. The tops and bottoms are all neatly steamed, prepared for the next fitting and stored in the royal wardrobe. After this, it is noted what she wore to which occasion. This way she avoids wearing the same outfits multiple times on the same work visits.

To borrow

And every now and then a clean-up moment is scheduled, and items from Máxima’s wardrobe go to her daughters, for example. She occasionally gives away something to her daughters or other family members. For example, mother Maria del Carmen sometimes borrows something from the wardrobe and the A’s are regularly spotted wearing items of clothing from Máx’s original wardrobe during public performances.

And have we already spotted Alexia in one of her mother’s denim jackets…

…and of course the Oscar de la Renta dress from her first work visit also came from her mother’s wardrobe.

Museum pieces

‘Important’ pieces are also sometimes loaned to a special exhibition, such as her wedding dress. She lent her Valentino to the exhibition Yes, I Want, which zoomed in on all royal weddings from the end of the eighteenth century. The royal blue gown by Jan Taminiau that Máxima wore during the inauguration ceremony of WA could be admired at the Dutch Design Awards exhibition, and earlier this year the Hague Art Museum announced that they could borrow some of the majesty’s unique headgear for their exhibition Royals & Rebels.

And hey, if our queen really no longer knows where to go with the items she no longer wears: niece Eloise certainly knows what to do with her second-hand fashion platform My Lima Lima. The My Lima Lima physical store should open its doors sometime in the coming months, so who knows what pre-loved royal items we will encounter there!
