Want to see: Frederik and Mary in traditional costumes

The fantastic colours and thousands of beads make it a festive whole.

You gotta love those busy prints and bright colors that Queen Mary wore yesterday during her visit to the Greenlandic town of Sisimut. It is clear that she did not fish this outfit out of her regular wardrobe, but that this is traditional costume.

Greenland

The visit of the Danish King Frederik and Queen Mary to Greenland is in full swing. Accompanied by their two youngest children, Vincent and Josephine, they are spending a week on the island, which is part of the Danish kingdom. Yesterday, the foursome visited Sisimut, one of the largest cities in Greenland with around 5,500 inhabitants.

Traditional clothing

Together with the kids, the royal couple arrived in Sisimut on the royal ship Dannebrog. Instead of the wintery but stylish outfits they had previously dressed in, they opted for traditional costumes today. For Mary, this meant a colorful outfit, consisting of red fabric with beautiful, colorful figures, flowers and countless beads. The pattern was even visible on the accompanying boots. The female costume has a striking collar on which thousands of beads make geometric shapes, which developed into a national symbol in the twentieth century. This costume is worn during holidays, birthdays and funerals, and royal visits are now also included in that list.

We almost dare not say it, but next to Mary Frederik’s outfit was almost nothing. He wore a modest white and black suit, on which a few medals were pinned. The Greenland boots give the outfit a bit of a zing, but it is clear that Mary steals the show here!

Sisimut

Once in the city, the king and his son were given an explanation of the methods for sustainable, local production of dog food for sled dogs. At the same time, Mary and her daughter visited the Pissassarfik handicap center. In the afternoon, the group reunited and were given a tour of Sisimut, including a walk along the so-called Love Path around the city’s lake. Sweet!
