Velvety soft: royals set the winter trend with velvet outfits

From Charlene to Mary and from Caroline to Letizia!

The most exuberant glitter dresses from the past festive period can be put away again, but what now? After all, we want to get through the coming period in style without freezing our derrières off. Fortunately, we only have to look at the royals for a stylish piece of inspiration: velvet and velor are all the rage this winter.

Royal wardrobe

Of course we know that the royal wardrobes are always well stocked. Instead of endless fast fashion, we find a lot of timeless elegance, local designers, and very expensive designer brands and luxury labels.

Yet we also notice that the average royal lady often goes along with all kinds of trends – but then trends set by fellow royals. In recent weeks we have seen all kinds of celebrities in velvet make their appearance again and again. From glamorous gown to business suit or subtle accessory and from neutral black to bright colour: velvet can do it all. We have listed some inspiration for you!

Red Velvet

For example, we recently saw this beautiful wine-red Birgit Hallstein gown of Danish Crown Princess Mary, which she wore on January 1 for the traditional New Year’s banquet.

The dress has been Mary’s favorite for some time, because she first wore it on January 1, 2007 (!) and has already worn this beautiful dress five times on New Year’s Day. And don’t blame her!

Swedish Princess Sofia also wore a red velvet dress during one of the many events in the run-up to Christmas. She keeps it a little more casual than her neighboring princess with this red Andiata wrap dress.

Her Serene Highness also chose red velvet in the New Year’s video from Monaco. Princess Charlene appeared next to Prince Albert, who delivered his New Year’s message in an asymmetrical dress by Ralph Lauren.

Colorful

Moreover, that is not the only velvet dress that Charlene has pulled out of her (very impressive) wardrobe in recent weeks. For example, she appeared in a gold velvet evening dress in front of the Christmas tree in the wonderfully glamorous family snapshot that the Monegasques shared before Christmas.

Sweet detail: according to the usually well-informed source Royal Fashion Police, both Charlene and daughter Gabriella are said to have worn pieces from design label DidierAngelo.

Even sister-in-law, Princess Caroline, has taken on the velvet trend. She exceptionally alternated her endless Chanel outfits with a deep blue velvet robe from Seren London.

Swedish Princess Victoria also opted for a velvet robe for one of her many royal duties last December. She appeared in emerald green at an annual meeting of the Svenska Akademien, of which her father, King Carl Gustaf, is the patron.

Like sister-in-law Sofia, Vic opted for a dress with a wrap detail, although the Crown Princess’ Camilla Thulin dress is a little more glamorous. Of course, all those honorary pins also take the outfit to a higher level.

A bit different

Okay, so a lot of glam robes. But if you don’t have any festivities, red carpet events or other glamorous occasions planned in the near future, what then?

Well, then the ever-stylish Queen Letizia sets a good example in her Paco Rabanne suit:

La reina wore the outfit to a festive concert by the Spanish national orchestra at the end of last month. With satin and crystal, this business suit has a nice glam edge, and we wouldn’t consider it a crazy office outfit with a set of beautiful loafers and a comfortable top.

And finally: if all those head-to-toe velvet outfits are just a bit too much for you…

Beatrice

Then you can always contact Princess Beatrice for inspiration. She wore a warm winter outfit for the annual Christmas walk at Sandringham, which she completed with a striking Justine Bradley-Hill Mildred headband in blue velvet. Subtle and on trend – that’s how it is possible!
