Jules Von Hep explains how to get the most beautiful even complexion.
Now that summer is approaching, we would love to leave the house with a sun-kissed look. But if the sun is still hiding behind the clouds, self-tanner is a nice (interim) solution. Jules Von Hep, celebrity tanner and owner of Isle of Paradise, reveals his top tips for applying self-tanner.

Tanning drops, lotions, sprays and mousses: they can all provide a healthy, natural glow. Provided you use them properly of course, but how do you do that? And what should you especially not do? Jules Von Hep knows all about that. For fifteen years, the British tanning expert sprayed celebs and fashion models such as Kate Moss and worked on photo shoots, catwalks and major fashion and beauty campaigns. Von Hep advocates a natural sun-kissed look that matches your own complexion. That is why in 2019 he developed the popular Isle of Paradise tanning products with color correcting active ingredients as a base, so that ‘everyone can look like they have had their best holiday ever’.
How to self-tan
According to Von Hep, it is important to start by prepping your body. “Clean your body: wash off your deodorant and cleanse your face. Shave your legs 24 hours in advance, scrub your body and apply body cream to dry areas such as hands, elbows and feet in advance. This way you create smooth skin on which you can apply the tanning product evenly.” Okay, makes sense.
But how do you ensure – especially if you don’t use self-tanning products that often – that you don’t get spots or zebra stripes? Von Hep: “You can prevent this with ‘stroking’. Always apply a self-tanning product, such as a mousse or body spray, with a glove and make long lengthwise strokes. Never make circular movements. The pressure is then different, which means you get spots or stripes more quickly.” Another tip: always start at your ankles – not your feet – and work your way up.
Final steps
Then use a large round kabuki brush on your face, elbows, feet and hands to blend the product for a natural look. In any case, choose a different product for your face. “I love my Self Tanning Drops that you can mix with your own favorite day cream,” says Von Hep. “Three drops through your cream and you get a gorgeous glow. Do you have blonde hair? Then apply some day cream to your eyebrows and hairline in advance. This prevents you from accidentally coloring your eyebrows and hairline. Oh, one more must: don’t forget your ears and neck.”
