An eventful year for the royals!
With only hours to go until the end of the year, it is of course high time to look back on what 2023 has brought us. It was of course an eventful year for many royalty watchers, and we saw that reflected in our best articles of this year! We’re counting down.
5. August and Lilibet
With Harry and Meghan safely in Montecito and York’s Princess Eugenie raising her brood out of the spotlight as much as possible, it’s very rare that we get a glimpse of their brood.
When it was spotted in a rare snapshot of son August Brooksbank that he looked exactly like his great-niece, Princess Lilibet, it naturally attracted a lot of attention. The special similarity between August and Lilibet therefore ranks fifth on this list.
4. The single gloves of the Oranjes
Like every year, Budget Day was of course full of formal activities and political decisions, with the Speech from the Throne as the highlight. Or well…highlight? We will honestly admit that (in addition to the serious matters that are in the well-known suitcase) we mainly paid attention to the beautiful outfits that the Oranjes are pulling out of their closet again. This year was of course the first time that the newly adult Princess Alexia was allowed to appear next to our royal couple and the Crown Princess.
But what really attracted attention? That was the fact that Queen Máxima, Princess Amalia, and Princess Alexia were all spotted wearing only one glove. How does that actually work? Is there a reason for that? We were clearly not the only ones curious about this, because the answer to this question is one of our most read articles of the year.
3. William and Kate’s kiss
Prince William and Princess Kate undoubtedly have a very loving relationship. But do you want to show affection towards each other in public? That rarely happens. Protocols and practical objections, you understand. When the Waleses were spotted sharing a heartfelt smack after a polo match, all sorts of body language experts were naturally called in to comment.
With the ‘iconic but telling mistakes’ of his father and the late Princess Diana still in memory, it is no surprise that this hottie also grabbed worldwide headlines.
2. Charlene’s trip to South Africa
In 2021, Prince Albert and the twins had to miss their wife and mother, Princess Charlene, for almost six months after she suffered serious health problems in her home country of South Africa. Ultimately, another stay in a Swiss clinic followed, and after almost a year, Char finally appeared side by side with her family in Monaco again in March 2022. Since then, there seems to be a clear upward trend in the princess’s well-being, and she is increasingly appearing at all kinds of events.
When Charlene returned to South Africa this fall, where it all went wrong, it naturally attracted a lot of attention. And that Prince Albert had to cancel his presence at the last minute amid a lot of rumors about marital problems? This of course ensured that all eyes were on the princess during her visit.
1. Great news for the Sussexes
You could wait for it: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (despite their quest for privacy) have been in the news in recent months. From the release of Spare to the end of Meghan’s podcast Archetypes and of course Harry’s lawsuit against various tabloid newspapers: the royals of Montecito are busy.
Glamial’s most read royal news of this year did not revolve around any of the above matters, their final exit from Frogmore Cottage, or Meghan’s absence from the coronation, but about a wonderful nomination that the couple managed to win with their documentary Harry & Meghan. Will they also win this prize? That should become clear next year. In any case, the Sussexes are our top performers of the year!
