Stress about other people’s opinions of you? Then do this

What someone thinks about you shouldn’t matter, right? Well, it’s not surprising that you sometimes worry about other people’s opinions of you. But there is no need to constantly stress about this. This is how to stop worrying about other people’s opinions of you.

Know that no one thinks about you as much as you do

This is a reality check that we all need sometimes. It is honestly true that you are the one who thinks about you the most. Other people do that about themselves too. We are the center of our own world. Everyone is busy with their own life and the things going on in it. So that one comment you made that kept you awake at night has long been forgotten by others.

Don’t try to read other people’s minds

It is pointless to worry about what others think about you at any given moment. Because you’ll never know unless they tell you. Constantly thinking that people don’t like you because they behaved a little differently than normal only makes you insecure. People who care about you will speak up when something is wrong, and as long as they don’t, nothing is wrong. Chances are that their opinion of you hasn’t changed overnight.

Break the cycle of worry by distracting yourself

If you’re obsessively worrying about something that really isn’t the end of the world, the best thing you can do is distract yourself. For example, think of when your crush hasn’t liked your new photo on Instagram. In the moment this feels very big, but it is not at all. Distract yourself in any way possible. These kinds of thoughts are not worth your time.

Be aware of your own negative preconceptions about yourself

We all have a critical voice in our heads. We are all our worst critic. This can make us think that other people share these negative opinions about you. When someone looks at you at the gym you immediately assume it is for a negative reason, while it could also be for a positive reason. You immediately rule out positive situations. Be aware of this and challenge the negative thoughts with positive thoughts.

Depending on who it is, just ask them their opinion

This may sound very intimidating, but sometimes just asking someone their opinion is the best way to stop your worrying. Because once you know, you can’t worry anymore. There is no more ‘what if’. If you are really concerned about the fact that someone is acting differently towards you, it can be a good idea to simply ask if something is wrong. Don’t be too direct, just ask calmly if something is wrong. Or indicate that you didn’t like the fact that they didn’t respond to your text, for example. This way you can have a constructive conversation that will undoubtedly help you get rid of your worries.
