Sinéad O’Connor (✝56) and Shane MacGowan (✝65) are honored! The two are among the biggest stars that Ireland has ever produced – they also shared a deep friendship and collaborated on songs together. Last year both musicians died: the singer of natural causes and The Pogues frontman after a long illness. Now will Sinead and Shane honored with a tribute concert in New York.
As the band Dropkick Murphys announced on Instagram, the two will be remembered under the title “Sinéad and Shane” on March 20th at Carnegie Hall in New York. In addition to the folk punk band, Cat Power, David Gray and The Mountain Goats have been confirmed for the tribute concert. All proceeds from the event – whose VIP tickets cost between 270 and 18,000 euros – go to charity.
Shane Widow Victoria Mary Clarke is grateful for the event. “Shane would really appreciate this honor. He loved Carnegie Hall and he loved Sinéad,” she tells The Independent. It is painful that the two artists are no longer alive – but a consolation that they will represent Irish music forever: “In my opinion they were two of the rawest, most passionate and most powerful singers in the world.”
