Charles was missing from the ceremony for the first time in 10 years.
Last Thursday it was time for The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes, in honor of higher education in the United Kingdom. This time it was up to Queen Camilla to hand out the prizes, without King Charles at her side.
The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes
The awards ceremony takes place every two years and is named after the late Queen Elizabeth. So this year it was time to honor the work between 2022 and 2024 by awarding a number of wonderful prizes.
The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes have been taking place since 1994. In the meantime, no fewer than 86 universities and 59 further education colleges have received a total of 318 prizes.
Without Charles
Yet this time it was slightly different than other times. For example, Queen Camilla was not in the presence of King Charles, but in that of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. The trio presented the prizes to all winners at Buckingham Palace.

The universities and schools that received awards include The University of the Arts London, for shaping the fashion industry and the City of Glasgow College for working on ways to save sailors.

Royal duties
Since Charles was diagnosed with cancer, he has stepped back from much of his royal duties. This also applies to attending The Queen’s Anniversary Prizes. It was the first time since 2014, when he took over this task from his mother, that Charles was absent.
And although he has stepped down from many of these important tasks to focus on his treatments, he has not stopped working completely. Earlier this week, for example, he received Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in person at Buckingham Palace for the weekly audience.
