Cupid didn’t always hit the target in one go.
The romances of the royal families are often put under a magnifying glass. We are always up-to-date when it comes to relationships and marriages, but also when it comes to divorces, break-ups and other vicissitudes concerning the love lives of the royals.
Monaco
Princess Caroline of Monaco was only 21 when she married playboy Philippe Junot, much against the wishes of her parents Rainier and Grace. Junot cheated frequently and after two years the marriage was over.
Three years after the divorce, Caroline married her great love Stefano Casiraghi, with whom she had three children. In 1990, Stefano died after a fatal speedboat accident. The princess never quite got over it.
England
Lady Diana Spencer seemed like the ideal bride for Crown Prince Charles, but they did not have a happy marriage. Charles could not forget his former mistress Camilla and they started an affair, which (partly) led to Diana’s divorce.
Two years after the tragic death of the princess, Charles and Camilla made their first public appearance together and married in 2005. Almost twenty years later they are still very happy.
Denmark
Prince Joachim of Denmark divorced the Chinese-English Alexandra in 2005, reportedly because the couple had grown apart due to Joachim’s penchant for parties and car racing. They had two children together and are still friendly.
Joachim found new love with the French Marie Cavallier, whom he married in 2008 and who gave him two more children. And their blended family gets along great.
For example, Princess Marie revealed in an interview a few years ago: “I always tell my husband that we are so lucky because the four children love each other so much despite their age difference,” says Marie. “I will always encourage them to be there for each other throughout their lives. When we are in Denmark, they do a lot together. Seeing them united is very important for us as parents.”
