On to Malmö: Joost Klein leaves for the Eurovision Song Contest

“Someone is going to give twelve points anyway,” the singer says, laughing at Schiphol.

Today the time has finally come: Joost Klein has boarded a plane to Malmö, where he will represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest. In front of the cameras at Schiphol, he makes one last revelation about his act.

Rehearsals

On May 9, Joost will perform in the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest, and hopefully get a spot in the final on May 11. But before that happens, there is of course still some rehearsal to be done. The first rehearsals have already started, and Joost will be on stage for the first time on Tuesday to practice his song Europapa.

Even though the rehearsals are not open to the public, people always show up sneak peeks of the acts on Eurovision’s social media channels. Joost himself is just not very happy with that. “Well, look, you’re not going to film a magician’s rehearsals, are you?” he told NU.nl at Schiphol. According to the singer, we can at least expect ‘magic’ during his performance.

To trust

Unfortunately, what exactly his act will look like will remain a secret for a while. But one thing is certain: Joost himself has complete confidence in it! “Well, someone is going to give twelve points anyway. Come on, that’s the bare minimum,” he says, laughing. “My goal was – I said from the beginning twelve points. That’s what I’m going for. Yes, fine, dude.”

Fortunately, Joost’s confidence is absolutely not misplaced. The Netherlands is currently in 3rd placee (!) place in the bookmakers, with a 13% chance of winning. Second place currently goes to Croatia, and at the top of the list is Switzerland. Exciting!

Bookmakers

Now we can really start the countdown to the big show, where the singer will represent our country with his song Europapa. This song combines nineties party influences with elements of DJ Paul Elstak and a touch of nostalgia. It is Joost’s tribute to his father, whom he lost at a young age.

With this striking song and Joost’s infectious enthusiasm, it is almost inevitable that we will get through the semi-finals effortlessly. Joost Klein, dream big!
