This is what you need to do if you miss your old job

Good to know.

Have you been working at your new job for a while, but are you really starting to miss your old job? No problem. It is completely normal that you can experience this feeling. However, this can be very annoying for some people. Because, what if you liked your old job more than your new job? We will tell you what to do then.

Approach

We sometimes proudly tell ourselves that we do not want to return to an old employer. But if that means you don’t do what you like, that is of course a real shame. So do you suddenly see a vacancy at your former employer? Then that really isn’t a step back. Employment agency Walters People shares a number of tips on how to approach a possible return.

Don’t romanticize the job or position

Walters People states that it is important that you first consult yourself about that job. Because why did you leave in the first place? List those reasons before you reapply for a job with your former employer. Do you also have a good relationship with a number of former colleagues? Then ask them what has changed during your absence.

A call

If there is a vacancy available, you can of course respond to it. Although there may be a better way. For example, you can call your ex-manager if he or she still works there and you have parted ways. Tell him or her that you miss your old job and would like to return. Your former colleague can then tell you what steps are best for you to take.

Sell yourself

You have already worked for your ex-employer, so they know what you can do. Or does that mean they will just hire you again? Unfortunately, that is not always the case. You will therefore have to make it clear why they should hire you again. You will also have to reassure your ex employer. The company will not hire you again if you leave in no time. Therefore, make it clear that your heart is in the matter.

Worst case scenario

Of course you hope that you get the job, but it can also happen that you are rejected. Is this the case? Then be sure to file a claim and ask why they didn’t want to rehire you. It is always good to keep the tires warm afterwards. Send an email to ask how things are going and make sure you connect with them on LinkedIn (if you haven’t already done so). This shows that you are sincere about your interest in the company. Who knows, they might think of you when another vacancy becomes available.
