Máxima’s wedding dress can soon be admired here

This way you can admire the dress in detail!

From that iconic tear to the balcony moment, and from the fantastic ceremony to the now iconic tiara: the wedding day of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima is still fresh in our memories. And of course we can’t forget Máx’s beautiful wedding gown. That is why we are particularly pleased with the announcement that everyone will soon be able to view the dress up close.

Yes I do

This autumn, The Fries Museum in Leeuwarden will open the brand new exhibition Yes, I Want, which focuses on wedding dresses from the last 250 years. In the museum you can view about sixty dresses, of which the oldest wedding clothes date from the eighteenth century. A journey back in time, then! You can also admire dresses from more modern designers such as Viktor&Rolf, Iris van Herpen and Jan Taminiau. Nikkie de Jager’s wedding dress, designed by Viktor&Rolf, can be seen in the museum.

“The diversity of the dresses not only shows changing fashion, but also offers a glimpse into social themes such as individuality, emancipation and gender equality,” the museum said.

Wedding dress from Máxima

Queen Máxima’s wedding dress, designed by Valentino, can also be seen in the museum – and that is perhaps what we are most excited about. This beautiful dress made of ivory-colored mikado silk with long sleeves, a bénitier neck and a five-meter-long train looked absolutely fantastic on her. However, Máxima herself had little say in the choice of her wedding dress. It was Princess Beatrix who announced what kind of design it would be.

“In the beginning, she thought she looked like a colossal plaster statue with every fitting,” can be read in Máxima: the Argentine years. “But no complaint came from her lips.” The dress, which Máxima would never choose herself, cost about 175,000 dollars. Fortunately, she was ultimately happy with it and even called it a ‘divine dress’.

Ron’s Honeymoon Quiz

For the exhibition, the museum is still looking for a wedding dress from the iconic TV program Ron’s Honeymoonquiz, which was shown on TROS and RTL4 from 1987 to 1996. “The program contributed to the popularity of the long white wedding dress,” said the Frisian institution. So if you happen to have such a dress hanging in your closet, or know someone who has it in their collection… The Fries Museum will be eternally grateful!

The exhibition can be seen in Leeuwarden from September 14 to February 16.
