Exactly twenty years ago, the then Danish Crown Prince, Frederik, and the Australian marketing lady Mary Donaldson, tied the knot. While the Danish court itself briefly reflected on it today with a sober message on social media, we naturally delved into the archives for the necessary glamor snapshots.
Sense of duty
While other royals show off with extensive throwback snapshots like William and Kate, or even with a full photo session à la Henri and Maria Teresa, Frederik and Mary keep it down to earth today. Despite the fact that they have achieved a significant milestone at the age of twenty, their porcelain marriage is not the highest priority today. This is evident from the message they shared on social media.

The two pose on the deck of the impressive ship Dannebrog in a set of practical matching body warmers that many ANWB couples can admire. The couple left for Norway today for their second state visit as the new royal couple.
“In a few hours, the Royal Couple will arrive in Oslo and begin a state visit to Norway, after Their Majesties departed from Denmark yesterday on the Royal Ship Dannebrog,” the court wrote in the photo.
Only then do they continue: “The arrival in the Norwegian capital also takes place on a very special day. It is the twentieth wedding anniversary of the King and Queen.” So it turns out: duty comes first for the sober couple! Cutely, the Norwegian court’s official account responds with the text: “Congratulations, see you soon!”
Throwback
Matching windbreakers are all well and good, but as glamor cats we love the splendor of the royal wedding just a little bit more. On May 14, 2004, the couple tied the knot in Copenhagen, after announcing their engagement in October of the previous year.

For the occasion, Mary was dressed in a beautiful gown by the Danish designer Uffe Frank, which she combined with a special historical veil, which was first worn by the great-grandmother of her new husband. Mary was the first lady who was not of noble birth who was allowed to wear this veil.
The radiant diadem on her head was a gift from Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik. A special royal gift from Mary’s in-laws, nun?

Of course, that tiara wasn’t the only shining jewel on the big day. For example, two impressive rings have been adorning Mary’s finger for years.
The ring with which her Prince Charming went down on one knee for the Australian beauty was set with one central diamond and two baguette-cut rubies next to it. This choice was certainly no coincidence: they are the colors of the Danish flag!
At her wedding, Mary was given a diamond ring on her finger, and since then she has worn the two rings as a small stack. Since then, she has provided her engagement ring with a set of glittering upgrades: an extra set of diamonds now shine on either side of the rubies. An extra dose of bling? Of course we are also big fans of that. On to the next twenty years!
