Joost Klein begged for help: fight against trauma and mental health care

At first glance, the life of Joost Klein, who represents the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, seems like a fairy tale. But behind the scenes, Joost Klein has experienced a lot of sadness. At just 26 years old, he has already had to overcome many setbacks.

Professional help

One of those setbacks was the search for professional help for his traumas. Joost was traumatized by all the misery he had experienced, but finding help proved to be a challenge in itself. “I had been emailing and calling for months, but you end up on a waiting list that is getting longer and longer,” Joost tells the weekly magazine Story.

Not a word about private life

Even those close to Joost, such as friend Johan Vlemmix, were surprised that Joost never actually talks about his private life. “Until a few years ago, he came to my house a lot,” Johan remembers. “I helped him and his friends make music videos. It was a joy to be in a room with him. But he never talked about his private life, nothing at all!”

Deceased parents

It is now known that Joost lost both his parents at a young age. These two events were of course a terrible blow, which he was confronted with at the age of twelve. These experiences formed the basis of his emotional journey, which he candidly shares in his music.

Another dark period for Joost Klein

Although Joost got his life back on track, he again entered a dark period a few years ago. He sought help, but found it difficult to get the right support. Ultimately he found a way out at the Trauma Center Netherlands, where he learned to process his traumas. “You can discuss certain traumas very specifically there, you choose one or two traumas as if they were Pokémon cards and discuss them. Very intensely. In such a center you receive, for example, body therapy and EMDR. Since then I understand the word ‘processing’. pass,” Joost shares.
