Greek fairy tale ends: princely couple announces divorce

After fourteen years of marriage, the end has come to an end.

Bad news at the Greek court: the second son of the late King Constantine, Prince Nikolaos, and Princess Tatiana have announced that they are ending their marriage.

Parting

At the end of February they appeared arm in arm at the memorial service for their father-in-law and there seemed to be no problem. But this weekend the Greek court surprised many royalty watchers with the announcement that Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana have definitively ended their relationship.

A statement on the official website of the Greek royals reads: “We would like to inform you of an important and sincere decision by HRH Prince Nikolaos and Princess Tatiana. After fourteen years of marriage, they have chosen to end their union amicably. This decision was made with great care and mutual respect and reflects how much they value each other and the moments they have shared.”

Fairytale wedding

The couple had been together for a long time when the Greek court announced in December 2009 that they had become engaged. It seemed like a true fairytale wedding. Shortly after the wedding, Tati revealed that it didn’t feel like she had married a prince. “Although, he is my prince, but nothing more than that,” she shared at the time. Aww!

In a conversation with Vogue in 2016, the couple explained how happy they were in Greece: “I have never felt so happy, so excited, so at home as I do now.”

Friendly split

In the rest of the message, the court emphasizes that the two share a ‘strong friendship’. So there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it, but the stretch has simply gone. A big contrast to other recent divorces, but it can be done that way. The couple has no children, and with the Greek republic there is no throne for the royals to argue about. That makes a difference!

Divorces

Nikolaos and Tatiana are not the only royals who have announced the end of their relationship in recent weeks. Earlier this month it was announced that Peter Philips and his girlfriend Lindsay Steven had ended their relationship. Last month, several magazines headlined that Charlotte Casiraghi had been spotted on a date after her divorce from ex-husband Dimitri Rassam. And to top it all off, there was of course the (literal) divorce between Albanian Prince Leka and Princess Elia.

Of all the royal trends, we hope that this one will not continue in the coming months. Fingers crossed that we will see a lot of engagements and blossoming relationships in the near future. Let those spring fever come!
