Irritated ears? This is how you clean your earrings!

Simple and fast!

As real glamor cats, we are of course not averse to a large set of sparkling earrings or subtle pearl studs. But sometimes it happens that – despite all the good care – we still suffer from irritated ears. This is how you prevent and cure it.

Earrings

Whether you wear large pendants in your ears every day, or prefer to save the studs for special occasions: occasionally you experience irritation or inflammation. You can recognize this by a swelling, throbbing feeling in your earlobes. They often also look red and swollen, and with a bit of luck you may even notice that your holes can be a bit bloody when you take off all your jewelry at the end of a long day.

Especially if you have just had holes pierced or pierced, you run a greater risk of infection. This risk is even greater if you get yourself pierced in the summer. The warm weather makes it easier for bacteria to multiply. Aiii!

Fortunately, you can prevent this problem with a few simple steps.

Cleaning holes

We spend a lot of time on our skincare routine, but cleaning our ears can sometimes be neglected. Still, this is an absolute must if you notice that your earring holes are becoming irritated or inflamed. Clean the holes twice a day with a few drops of antiseptic, which is suitable for cleaning wounds. You can find this at most drugstores. Otherwise, a home-made saline solution is also a good option. Of course, make sure that you have washed your hands, otherwise cleaning is not very useful.

Do you notice that your ears are irritated or that blood is visible when you wear earrings again after a long time? Then treat them as if the holes have just been drilled: constantly wear a set of subtle studs made of gold, silver, or hypoallergenic metals, disinfect them several times a day, and (of course with washed or disinfected hands) turn the studs a few times a day to prevent them from getting stuck.

Although you can almost always solve inflammation this way, it may happen that the problems do not go away on their own. Do you notice that it is getting worse, that you are experiencing fever, or that the lymph nodes around your ear are swelling? Always contact your doctor.

Clean jewelry

It also helps to clean your jewelry every now and then. Kim Kanary, jewelry expert and diamond expert, tells Southern Living that you should actually give your studs a quick cleaning once a month. And you really don’t need expensive equipment for that! Her step-by-step plan looks like this:

  1. Mix two tablespoons of mild dishwashing liquid with about 900 milliliters of warm, but not hot, water.
  2. Leave your jewelry in this soapy water for about fifteen minutes.
  3. Brush them gently with a soft-bristled brush.
  4. Rinse clean with plain water and pat dry with a clean cloth.

Please keep in mind that not all jewelry with gemstones or pearls is suitable for cleaning like this. That’s why Kanary recommends inspecting your jewelry before and after cleaning – so you can immediately notice if any stones come loose.

And her golden tip? “Remember, if you clean your earrings over the sink, put the stopper in the drain.” Ha!
