Do you need to insure your pet? We tell it

A visit to the vet usually costs quite a bit, so is it smart to insure your pet?

Worry less

The Animal Protection Society and many veterinarians recommend taking out pet insurance, because this will help keep the high premiums down. Pet owners are also less likely to opt for euthenasia for the animal, for example because they can no longer afford the high bills and healthcare costs. However, there are still doubts among owners about such insurance: not every pet needs the same amount of care, and every bill is different. Naturally, you take out insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances and high expenses. Another major advantage is that the animal receives relatively better veterinary care when it is insured.

Cons

Insuring your pet can be very beneficial, but it also has its disadvantages. For example, consider the costs: even if your pet does not require care, you continue to pay the monthly premium. But at least you know there’s nothing serious going on with your best friend. In addition, it is important that you know what you are insuring your pet for: like many other types of insurance, insurance companies change their conditions annually, so you sometimes think that you are insured for something, but this turns out not to be the case. Therefore, always read the small print, even with pet insurance, and check every now and then what exactly the conditions are.

Another disadvantage is the trade-off: do you want to pay a monthly premium, even if nothing serious might happen? You can’t predict most circumstances, especially with a playful pet. For example, chemotherapy or orthopedic care in pets is very expensive, and many pet owners still choose to amputate a leg, rather than undergo orthopedic surgery by specialists who could have saved the leg. It is simply far too expensive to pay for such a procedure directly from their pockets, and some even opt for euthanasia.

To ensure?

Another point to consider for pet insurance: not all insurance policies appear to cover one hundred percent of specialist treatments, and some insurance policies exclude certain breed conditions. Therefore, check carefully whether your pet is suitable for insurance: look at your financial situation, the type of breed of your pet, the common problems of the breed and the age of the animal. You can also always inquire with a veterinarian, they want to provide the best medical care and will be happy to let you know whether it is useful to insure the animal.
