What is build-up in your hair and what can you do about it?

Washing your hair is wonderful to do. It won’t leave your hair nice and clean, but it can also be refreshing on a hot day.

You would think that regularly washing your hair will make it cleaner and the quality will remain just as good, but that is not entirely true. Whether you are looking for a solution against build-up in your hair for your short hairstyles or your hairstyles for long hair, we are happy to list the different options for you!

If you don’t wash your hair properly or use the wrong products, you can even suffer from scalp problems and the quality of your hair will deteriorate.

Do you recognize this? Then you may be suffering from a build-up. But? How can you recognize it further, what exactly does it mean and how can you remedy it?

How do you get build-up in your hair?

But, how exactly do you get build up in your hair? It’s not hard to imagine that things pile up when nothing is done about them and when more and more are added.

This also happens with the substances that end up on your hair or the agents that stick to your scalp.

There are a number of substances that are simply difficult to wash out of your hair and also cause the most build-up on the scalp. Examples include ingredients that condition your hair, heavy oils and silicones such as.

But fatty alcohol and phthalates also cause this accumulation. Unfortunately, these substances are common in hair care products. A good shampoo is therefore very important, I can definitely recommend the products from Maroccanoil (I love their dry shampoo).

And while you would think that hair care products should not contain these types of substances because they should care for your hair, right?

As soon as you notice flakes in your hair or itching on your scalp, you can almost be sure that you too suffer from build-up.

It looks like dandruff, but it isn’t. If you scratch your scalp with your nails, you will notice a dirty, greasy substance stuck under your nails. This does not happen with dandruff, because then it is dry and flaky.

This greasy substance is a layer of the build-up that you just scraped off.

Can you prevent build-up?

It is not fun at all if you suffer from build-up because you will notice this in the quality of both your scalp and your hair.

Your hair becomes more brittle and your scalp becomes itchy.

In addition, you will also notice that your hair becomes tangled or frizzy more quickly and that your curls and waves no longer have the vitality they used to have. So you want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. But how do you do this?

What can you do against build-up in your hair?

Avoidance is always the best remedy. Of course, this is not always possible, but you can try.

For example, choosing a good, cleansing shampoo such as a deep cleanser is recommended. Clay is also a good way to prevent build-up. Clay is cleansing and natural.

You can also rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar! It doesn’t smell that good and it’s quite intense for your hair and scalp, but it certainly helps.

It is therefore included in more and more shampoos, but you also have the option of buying loose clay cubes that you can then spread over your hair and scalp.

A scrub brush is a good brush to use and also gives your scalp a massage.

I use a nice shampoo containing rhassoul clay from Urtekram several times a week.

Sometimes you also have to switch hair products: so don’t always use your standard shampoo and conditioner, that helps to prevent your scalp from getting used to all the products. I also use the Maroccanoil shampoo in between.

A homemade paste with sodium bicarbonate can also help you. Mix a few tablespoons with some water to form a paste that you can easily spread over your scalp and thus remove the build-up from your hair and scalp.

Degreasing is the most important thing when it comes to stripping your hair so it can become healthy and shiny again. But… be careful not to use too heavy and intense products!

The disadvantage of co-washing

Co washing is an attempted method of washing hair to prevent frizzy hair from becoming dry quickly.

Instead of shampoo, hair is then washed with conditioner. It does not work optimally and completely defeats the purpose.

Shampoos contain ingredients that you need to clean the hair. These substances are not contained in sufficient quantities in conditioners. It is better to just go for a good cleansing shampoo and also use a conditioner if necessary.

The curly girl method and build-up in your hair

According to the curly girl hair method, you should avoid shampoos with sulfates, avoid harmful ingredients and avoid washing your hair too often.

If you choose to wash, do so with good products and take care of both your hair and scalp as best as possible to prevent build-up.

The idea is then to gradually reduce the use of shampoo with parabens. Only when you have to deal with build-up can you choose to use Final Was shampoo.

Also keep in mind that with overly fine curls you can’t really choose to stop shampooing. Maintain your curls in a natural way and also tackle build-up with the right treatments.

Build-up is an annoying problem, but by choosing the right products and being economical and careful with your hair and scalp, you can try to prevent build-up.
