The stone has a long history. The archives of the British Museum contain documents showing that after the coronation of the Dutch Stadtholder William III and his wife Mary Stuart II (1689) as King and Queen of England, a large and uncut diamond was presented to the queen. Until 1690, a close friend of the royal couple, Hans Willem Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland, negotiated on behalf of the queen about the purchase of this stone, which had previously been offered to a “foreign prince” for the sum of 30,000 pounds. After it was finally agreed that the working of the diamond would be the buyer’s risk, Lord Portland, as an intermediary, made a deposit of four thousand pounds on this “Great Stone”. Ultimately, the seller, Sir William Langhorn of Barre & Company, would receive a sum of £12,338 for this gigantic diamond. According to the seller, the diamond was particularly suitable for cutting a perfect heart and that it would then look best in a head or chest jewelry, or a devant de corsage. Finally, in 1690, William III purchased the large rough diamond as a gift for his wife, Mary II of England. After Mary’s death, the stone remained in Willem’s possession, although Mary’s sister did her utmost to get it her way. The Stuart diamond has always remained in the possession of the House of Orange through Prince Willem V. Fortunately, because that means Máxima can shine tonight.
