‘They find support in each other.’
Royal family experts now know that the Oranges are very close to each other. But the bond between princesses Beatrix and Amalia is also particularly strong.
Grandmother and granddaughter
We have written before about the many similarities between the Princess of Orange and her grandmother, Princess Beatrix. But in addition to the physical similarity, the two are also said to be very similar in character. And that creates a special bond between the two, which does not go unnoticed by outsiders.
For example, author Peter Rehwinkel previously wrote about the Crown Princess and the special bond she seems to have with her grandmother, Princess Beatrix. It goes further than a sweet nickname. “They have a shared destiny in life and that gives them a kind of solidarity,” says Rehwinkel. “I know from former minister Jet Bussemaker, who was close to the Royal family all day at the inauguration of Willem-Alexander, that Beatrix’s care for Amalia made a great impression.”
“It was a moment when Amalia realized: this is going to happen to me too. That realization must have dawned on her and Beatrix was able to guide her through it. Conversely, Amalia also supports Beatrix. This became clear at the inauguration, when her grandmother was addressed personally.”
In conversation with Claudia de Breij, Amalia shared that her father’s inauguration indeed made a big impression. “It was like a slap in the face. All those people were staring at me like I had a goldfish on my head.”
“That day of the inauguration was also a big push in the other direction. I wanted to help my parents, I felt that very strongly,” said the Crown Princess just before her eighteenth birthday. Luckily, she had her grandmother to help her through this moment!
Support
Princess Amalia is still the one who stands next to her grandmother and puts an arm around her – watch such a sweet moment from 2:10 in this video by Vorsten:
The three princesses must also show respect for their grandmother, Rehwinkel writes. When Princess Beatrix leaves after a visit, there is a certain protocol. “When the princesses made no move to get up from their chairs, father Willem-Alexander was implacable: ‘If your grandmother leaves, you stand up’.”
Horses
In addition, grandmother and granddaughter share their love for equestrian sports. For example, Amalia told Claudia de Breij that she regularly takes a snapshot of Beatrix’s horse in the royal stables. “Then she sends the photo to an electronic photo frame that Princess Beatrix, despite her hatred of technical gadgets, has in her home.” Aww!
