A fake jump cost Linda dearly.
Linda de Mol has been a welcome face on Dutch television for many years. However, it is not only popular in the Netherlands, but also with our eastern neighbors. However, Linda had to experience first-hand that popularity can change quickly. She reveals how her spotless image in Germany was suddenly damaged.
Presenting in Germany
The first program that Linda de Mol presented to our eastern neighbors is Traumhochzeit, the German version of Love Letters. In her own words, this is ‘the bravest’ thing she has done, the presenter writes in her own magazine. Despite being extremely nervous, she quickly won over the German audience. “And if they put you high on a pedestal somewhere, it is in Germany,” says Linda.
Fear of heights
Due to her popularity, Linda was soon used for more German TV programs, including a show where she had to help a boy overcome his fear of heights. Very noble of the blonde, nun?
“A gigantic crane was ready outside the studio, but the editors were afraid that it might not work after all and then we wouldn’t have an item, so the plan came up that I would make a bungee jump,” Linda looks back on that moment. “We would film that and show it, like: see, Linda dares to do it too.”
Off the pedestal
However, the presenter’s contract stated that she was not allowed to do dangerous things. That’s why her bungee jump was staged, without her actually having to jump. But that fake jump cost her dearly in the German press. “Of course it came out, because it turned out not to be that well edited after all, so the Bild Zeitung angrily ran the headline: ‘Can the blonde Engel lie?’” Linda remembers.
“For example, an action, which in itself was quite heroic, made a significant, but perhaps healthy, dent in my ‘angel status’.” Because Linda remains a down-to-earth Dutchman, of course. “After all, being hoisted too high on a pedestal is not good for anyone.”
