Yes! Pia Douwes returns in her role as Empress Sisi

‘Pia is Elisabeth. Still,” said producer Albert Verlinde.

Big news for Pia Douwes! Today it was announced that the stage veteran will once again take on the role of her life in the upcoming musical production Elisabeth, about the life of the legendary Austrian Empress Elisabeth.

Back to Elizabeth

Throughout the centuries, Empress Elisabeth, or ‘Sisi’, as we also know her, has always captured the imagination. From films and series to books and plays: we can’t stop talking about the queen.

When the musical Elisabeth premiered 32 years ago in (where else) Vienna, it was none other than our own Pia Douwes who took the leading role. Over the years she has brought the empress back to life in Berlin, Stuttgart, and Scheveningen, among others.

And today it was revealed that Pia will once again take on the leading role in Elisabeth’s upcoming production!

Shared role

The upcoming production of the musical is slightly different from previous editions. This time the role of the illustrious highness is split into two, as has been done in Austria in recent years. Musicalweb states: “Pia will play the adult Elisabeth and who will play the young Elisabeth will be announced soon.”

Always Elizabeth

Pia herself responded to the big news in a short statement: “What an honor to be asked again for the role I was once able to create in Vienna.” She also shares that she is looking forward to reviving the Austrian Empress. “She remains a fascinating woman who was way ahead of her time.”

Producer Albert Verlinde also has some words of praise for the casting of la Douwes. “Pia is the one and only Elisabeth. The fact that it has been 25 years since she played this role in the Netherlands does not change that. She is one of the rare women who can play this role again after so many years. Pia is Elisabeth. Still.” And we can only agree with that!

Cast

Who we expect to be in the upcoming production will remain a secret for a while. However, how nice would it be if other players also made their triumphant return? We would absolutely love a reunion with Stanley Burleson, Doris Baaten and Jeroen Phaff!
