A special moment for Margrethe, Frederik, and Mary.
This New Year’s Eve we received a big surprise from Denmark: Queen Margrethe announced that she would abdicate on January 14. This ends her reign after exactly 52 years. On New Year’s Day, the Danish royals traditionally appeared in full regalia at a festive reception to ring in the new year, and here all eyes were of course focused on the future king and queen: Frederik and Mary.
New Year’s banquet
With only two weeks left until Margrethe passes her throne to her eldest son, the Danish monarch hosted the annual New Year’s banquet for the very last time yesterday. With this festive tradition, the new year is heralded in every time.
Also yesterday, several members of the Danish royal family appeared in full glam at Amalienborg Castle, to ring in 2024 in full regalia. In addition to Margrethe, Frederik, and Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Marie, among others, were also present, as was Princess Benedkeek. And it all looked very festive!

Of course, the festive banquet had a bittersweet edge, as it would be the last time Margrethe (a much-loved monarch) hosted this festive affair. And for the crown prince couple the evening was just as special, as it was the first time they showed up after the big announcement. For the occasion, according to UFO No More, Crown Princess Mary wore her deep red Birgitte Hallstein gown, which she has regularly worn for New Year’s banquets over the decades – for the first time in 2007! On her head was the ruby parure tiara, which matched perfectly with the wine-red shade of her dress.
Princess Marie (seen above in the second photo) also radiated in a deep blue lace peplum gown by designer Rikke Gudnitz. Over the years, he has also regularly appeared at all kinds of official occasions.
More festivities
Although you would think that the Danes will have their hands full preparing for the change of throne in the coming weeks, there are many more festive New Year’s banquets on the agenda. This traditional ‘nytårstaffel’ was the first of several banquets that take place in January. Yesterday, prominent politicians and members of the royal household took center stage, on the second day the banquet revolves around military leaders and the diplomatic corps, and at the third New Year’s banquet all kinds of representatives of major organizations and the Danish army can join.
Relaxing in the run-up to the big day is not an option for the Danish royals!
