The world mourns the loss of an exceptional talent. Benjamin Kiplagat had made a name for himself at a young age as a successful obstacle and long-distance runner. Among other things, the athlete from Uganda won a silver medal in cross-country running at the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz in 2008. The professional athlete came ninth at the Olympic Games in Beijing. But at the turn of the year, terrible news became known: Benjamin is dead.
As Bild reports, the 34-year-old was found dead in a car in the Kenyan city of Eldoret on December 31, 2023. Benjamin’s death is said to have been caused by severe stab wounds to the chest and neck. According to the newspaper, there are many indications of a “brutal knife attack”. Two suspects have already been arrested. The exact course of events is currently still being determined.
There is great participation on social media. The umbrella organization of all national sports associations for athletics dedicated touching words to him on X. “World Athletics is shocked and saddened by the news of the death of Benjamin Kiplagat,” the post says. It also says: “We express our deepest condolences to his friends, family, teammates and fellow athletes.”
