In their first interview as royal couple, they discuss the past and future.
Frederik and Mary have been able to call themselves the king and queen of Denmark since January. They spent their first months as royal couple relatively out of sight of the media, but yesterday it was time for their first television interview since the accession to the throne.
Very happy and proud
The Danish channel TV 2 spoke to Mary and Frederik on board their royal yacht, the Dannebrog. Of course, we first looked back to the big day in January. “It was extremely overwhelming and emotional,” says Frederik. “I felt extremely accepted. The highlight was when Mary and the children came out. With them right behind me and all those waving Danes in front of me – that was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.”
Mary also looks back with pride on the moment of the inauguration. “I stood there with the children, and the moment we stepped onto the balcony towards our new destiny was extremely moving. We could hear it and feel it, even though we couldn’t see it. It was a beautiful moment. I felt very happy and very proud.”
Future plans
When asked how they feel now in their new role, Mary honestly admits: “It is sometimes overwhelming. It’s very new, and there are a lot of changes and a lot of decisions, big and small.” She continues: “Not everything can happen in the blink of an eye. But I think there might be some kind of transition.”
The couple also confirms that although they consider tradition within the monarchy important, they keep their eyes on both the ‘past and the future’. “We haven’t mapped out a fixed route yet, but we do have a clear direction,” says Mary. “We want to continue in the footsteps that are already there: our interest in nature, communities and companies. As the royal couple, we want to be visible and present throughout Denmark.”
Royal ship
It was not without reason that Frederik and Mary were present on their royal yacht. The couple opened the sailing season for the first time as king and queen with a trip aboard the Dannebrog.

The Dannebrog has been in the possession of the royal family for decades. The ship is not only used for holidays and mini cruises, state visits are also regularly made by boat. It is even common knowledge that Frederik’s mother, Margrethe, was also a big fan of state visits by ship. Then she wouldn’t have to sleep in some strange palace, but could simply return to her own bed in her own cabin at the end of the day. So easy!
