Anne Hathaway: ‘I no longer got roles because of my bad image’

The actress has been in a deep valley.

Anne Hathaway has been known for longer than not. She has seen and heard everything in Hollywood, but it has not always turned out positively. The actress has also been in a deep valley, when her career was hanging by a thread.

Rather

A lot has changed for the actress in the past five years. She stopped drinking alcohol, became a mother for the second time, was allowed to blow out 40 candles and decided to prefer to be herself. “It’s the first time in my life that I know myself so well,” she explains in an interview with Vanity Fair. “I no longer care what others think about me. I know who I am and what my feelings are.”

Two personalities

It is no coincidence that Anne has this approach to life. When she became famous as a young actress, everyone had an opinion about how she should deal with it. “Everyone says you have to protect yourself. Everything and everyone is dangerous and wants something from you. People told me to keep my distance and create two personalities,” she says. By this she means the real Anne and the Anne that the outside world sees. “I found it very confusing. I don’t do it that way anymore. I am who I am.” That’s nice at some times, but less so at other times. “When you are criticized, it hurts you even more.”

Vomited out

She doesn’t like to think back to the period when people were very negative about her. There was a lot of criticism about her role as co-host of the Oscars. That hurt, because a certain insecurity from the past was brought up again. “I’ve thought that way about myself since I was seven years old and if that’s confirmed by the internet… Then that’s quite a thing.” From that moment on she hit rock bottom; she said she was vomited by the world. Her career suffered greatly.

Guardian angel

In 2013, Anne herself received an Oscar, but that did not put her back on the map. “People stopped giving me roles because of the bad image given to me online. People didn’t dare, they were afraid the films would flop.”

Filmmaker Christopher Nolan was her saving angel. “He didn’t care what people thought about me and he gave me one of the best roles I’ve ever had in one of the best movies I’ve had the pleasure of making.” She’s talking about her role as Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises. “I didn’t know if he did that consciously, but it had an effect. It saved my career.”

Mental health

The downward spiral she was in also brought about good things. The actress has started to take much better care of herself. “All the choices I make have to be good for my mental health,” she explains. “I no longer do things that drain me or make me feel bad.”
