Wim-Lex got her butt squeezed during a blood-curdling skating competition

The king was clearly on the edge of his seat.

We probably don’t need to tell you that Willem-Alexander is an avid sports fan. The king can regularly be found in the stands at a sporting match. But while this is usually accompanied by a lot of cheerful snapshots of him cheering and laughing, the mood at the Short Track World Championships last Sunday was a lot more somber.

World Short Track Championships

In between all the working visits, Wim-Lex had an outing last Sunday, which he attended not only as a king, but also as a sincere sports fan. The monarch sat in the stands of the World Short Track Championships in Rotterdam, where he cheered on the orange skaters.

Fanatic

Now we know that our king can be quite fanatical. For example, we still remember the images of the Olympic Games in 2008, when Willem-Alexander and Máxima first proudly, but calmly cheered on the Dutch athletes…

…But in the end they turned out not to be able to contain themselves very well.

Before we can expect to see these faces of the royal couple again, we will have to be patient for a few more months (the Summer Olympics start in July), but last weekend Wim-Lex was able to practice for a while. This time, however, it was a lot easier to keep a straight face, because there wasn’t much to cheer about.

Tears and falls

The World Short Track Championships were mainly characterized by tears and falls for the Dutch skaters on Sunday. It resulted in an equally serious face from the king.

The World Cup only yielded a gold medal for the women in the relay. Nevertheless, the king says on Instagram that he is proud of the athletes.

“What a wonderful short track weekend with a heroic fight in the final,” he writes. “It was a battle until the last lap, when everyone was rightly on the edge of their seats. It was fantastic to witness this race and ultimately see the Dutch women win gold. We congratulate Xandra Velzeboer, Selma Poutsma, Yara van Kerkhof and Michelle Velzeboer on this victory.”
