Things suddenly change for them! On New Year’s Eve, Queen Margrethe of Denmark (83) announced a real surprise: after 52 years on the throne, she is abdicating. It was the right time for her to retire. Her son Prince Frederik (55) will succeed her on January 14th. His wife Princess Mary (51) becomes the first Australian queen. With the new position, the two also receive new titles!
After their accession to the throne on January 14th, the couple will receive the following titles: King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark. Her eldest son Prince Christian (18) becomes the first heir to the throne and also gets a new name. In the future he may only be addressed as Crown Prince Christian.
Margrethe’s abdication is a real shock for the Danes – her decision comes as a surprise to many. But she may have done this to save her son’s marriage. Finally, Frederik is said to be having an affair. “It’s possible that the queen “took this action because she was afraid of the marriage breaking up,” author Phil Dampier claimed to The Telegraph.
