On a lazy evening we enjoy nothing more than watching hours of episodes of The Crown with a glass of rosé and a bowl of popcorn within reach. But what about the royals themselves? Do they zap away when the series comes along, or do they secretly stick around for a while?
Season 6
Since its debut in 2016, The Crown has continued to attract viewers. The series now has five seasons, and we don’t have to wait long for the sixth part. On November 16, many royalty watchers will rush to Netflix to enjoy the first four episodes of season 6, but does the same actually apply within the palace walls?
Maxima
Our own Máxima was very clear about this during the annual photo session last summer: MÁXIMA is not watched in her house, the series will soon be released on Videoland. At least: not by her. It wouldn’t surprise us if the A’s are secretly curious about a series about their mother’s life.
British royals
The British royals seem to have fewer problems with seeing actors reenact their own life stories. For example, Harry admitted last year during an interview with Stephen Colbert that he is also guilty of it. “Yes, I watched The Crown. Both older seasons and newer ones,” said the prince. “Even if it’s just to fact check.” Surprisingly, Harry was very positive about the series: “The series is of course fictional, but it does give you a rough idea of what the lifestyle is like, what pressure you feel and how that can turn out.”
William and Kate previously indicated that they did not watch The Crown. Edward and Sophie, on the other hand, do curl up on the couch and reportedly even convince the late Queen Elizabeth to watch. A source from the Daily Express said: “They often drive to Windsor Castle at the weekend for an informal dinner and to watch a film or series with the queen. And they have a Netflix account”
We cannot say with certainty, but it has been said so often that Charles was not happy with the storylines in The Crown, that we can almost assume that the king must have seen something. And besides: who doesn’t immediately grab the remote control when your own life is being re-enacted on TV?
Among the British royals, Eugenie is perhaps the biggest fan of The Crown. “The music is beautiful, the story is very beautiful,” the princess previously said about the series. “It made me proud. I can’t speak for my family, but that’s how it made me feel.”
