The Queen’s ex-brother-in-law makes no bones about it.
It seemed like trouble in paradise for the Spanish royal couple this week. In a freshly published book, none other than Letizia’s ex-brother-in-law claims he had an affair with the queen during the early years of her marriage to Felipe.

It must have been quite a shock inside the Spanish palace walls this week. The love story between Felipe and Letizia was rudely disrupted by Jaime Del Burgo, who published the book Letizia & I. The best man was previously married to Letizia’s sister, Telma Ortiz, and claims in the book that he previously had a relationship with the queen, who at that time had already married Felipe.
Affair
As many royalty watchers know, Letizia was married to another man before Felipe. This marriage lasted a year, from 1998 to 1999. In 2002, Leti met her true love: Felipe. The couple wasted no time and married a year later. Jaime Del Burgo now claims he began dating Letizia in 2000 and that it lasted into the early years of her marriage to the Spanish king.
During the preparations for the wedding between Letizia and Felipe, Del Burgo was reportedly asked to be a witness for the ceremony. To top it all off, he claims to have had dinner with Letizia the night before the wedding, during which she allegedly made a remarkable statement. “When we met, she grabbed my hand and asked me why I never asked her to marry me,” Del Burgo writes in the book. “Of course I didn’t answer. I encouraged her as best I could. The last thing she said to me before we said goodbye in that restaurant was: ‘Never leave me’.”
Letizia’s ex-brother-in-law even claims in the book that they would have a child together through a surrogate mother in Los Angeles. The alleged affair came to an end in 2011 when the queen called Del Burgo to say that they could no longer see each other. Yet he remained closely tied to the family. That same year, he started dating Letizia’s sister, and the couple married a year later. Around the time of that wedding, Letizia is said to have whispered in Del Burgo’s ear, “We will be together again.”
Scream for attention
Good: these are of course serious accusations, but the question is to what extent we should believe them. Del Burgo, who is now inundated with death threats, can recount it all in detail, but comes up with surprisingly little evidence. For now, the content of the book is mainly regarded as a cry for attention. In the meantime, everything will be fine inside the palace walls, nun?
