The two have been happily married for more than 50 years.
Marijke Helwegen has been in the spotlight for years. And while most showbiz relationships are broken after a Blue Monday, Marijke and her husband Harry have been very happy with each other for more than fifty (!) years.
From ambassador to whistleblower
Through her work for cosmetic doctor Robert Schoemacher, la Helwegen became a true figurehead for plastic surgery. As an expert by experience, the eloquent Marijke knew exactly how to explain the ins and outs of all kinds of cosmetic procedures.
Nowadays, Marijke is no longer the ambassador for injectables that she once was. For example, she shared with De Telegraaf a few years ago: “From being an ambassador, I have now become a kind of whistleblower. I don’t need that junk in my slender body anymore!”
The procedure felt like a major relief, and had another advantage: “Harry thinks I have become much more attractive, so that is also a bonus.”
Love at first sight
While many relationships in showbiz land now do not last longer than a few years, Marijke and Harry Helwegen set a good example. In a conversation with Party, Marijke already shared that she immediately fell ‘like a baby’ for Harry. Harry was slightly different from the boys that Marijke encountered in the Limburg nightlife world of the 1960s. Not a ‘country bumpkin’, but well dressed, with a sympathetic appearance and a good sense of humor.
Harry, in turn, once shared with Margriet: “I found the fact that she is so eloquent attractive when I met her 52 years ago.” And well, her ‘blonde hair’ and ‘beautiful big eyes’ made him completely melt! “There was something disarming about her,” said Harry. Many years have now passed and the two are still very happy with each other.

Different
The secret behind their relationship? In their own words, this is the fact that the two have endless understanding for each other. In conversation with Party, Marijke said: “I am emphatically present. Harry, an introvert and intellectual person, has no problem with that. I think the secret of our marriage is based on this. Harry and I set each other free; we completely accept that we are two different individuals.”
Harry told Margriet: “Good observation and the ability to listen are essential. That is also important in a love relationship.” He just likes the fact that Marijke is a real ‘talker’. “I won’t get bored with her easily, because there is always something happening.” By the way, Harry can also continue chatting himself. “When we walk through the woods on Sunday, we go over the week and then I also do a lot of the talking,” he explained.
So different and yet so well matched – many showbiz couples can appreciate that!
