In our daily lives there is more and more talk about drugs and their effects. But what effect does it have on sex? This article starts with the A of ayahuasca, what it is and what it does to you. And most importantly: how it affects your sex life.
What is ayahuasca?
Ayahuasca originally comes from the Amazon and is a brown-red hallucinogenic drink with a bitter taste. It is made from the ayahuasca vine and other plants. Some also call it ‘la purga’, because it often causes diarrhea or vomiting. Some also see this as spiritual and physical cleansing. The psychoactive drink is widely used by indigenous peoples in the Amazon region for medicinal and spiritual purposes. The ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular among people seeking personal growth, healing or spiritual experiences, but their use can involve risks and should therefore always be supervised by an experienced practitioner.
Operation
The active substance in ayahuasca is DMT. Normally this is broken down by so-called MAO enzymes. By adding a plant that contains MAO inhibitors, the breakdown of DMT by MAO is prevented. This allows DMT to reach your brain, allowing you to feel psychedelic effects. It is recommended to drink no less than half a cup and no more than a whole cup. Depending on the dosage, a trip lasts four to six hours. During this trip you will see beautiful colors and shapes, and smell strong scents. However, there is a good chance that you will become nauseous and vomit or develop diarrhea. The effect is unpredictable and can worsen psychological problems that were already there. Ayahuasca is not recommended if you have psychological problems or if you have family with a psychiatric disorder. The drink can cause a frightening feeling, loss of control and confusion.
Why no sex for ayahuasca?
Due to the spiritual purposes of ayahuasca, sex is strongly discouraged. In fact, it is often even banned. A few days or weeks before the ceremony you should no longer have intimate moments with anyone else, because in these moments you are exchanging energy with someone else. Sex is not only about intercourse, but also about the energies you have with each other. You exchange these during sex. But even after sex, this energy lingers with you for a while. Women have this more than men. This energy has consequences for the spiritual journey you make. Before and during the ceremony it’s all about yourself. The focus is on yourself, your own journey and it is therefore important that only your energy is present. That is not possible if you still carry energy from others with you.
