These are the best hairstyles and colors for people over 50

With a good haircut you shine even more!

Have you now passed the wonderful age of fifty and are you unsure which hairstyle suits your age? First and foremost, you should always continue to do what you feel good about, no matter how old you are. However, there are certain hairstyles and colors that generally work well for women over 50. We share them with you.

A new look

The German platform Freundin asked hair expert Ghanima Abdullah and stylist Fae Norris which hairstyles are most suitable for women over 50. If there is one age at which you can go all out, it is in your fifties. You will then have a lot of self-knowledge, be confident and some of the uncertainty from previous years will have disappeared. Gray hairs appear, but you are not ashamed of that. Either a color over it, or the natural look. However, do you also dare to try a completely new hairstyle? These are the do’s and don’ts according to Abdullah and Norris.

Highlights, but only natural ones

According to Abdullah, very light highlights are not a good idea after the age of fifty, because this is not very flattering. Especially if your hair is graying, it creates a great contrast, which can make your hairstyle look not exactly natural. This also applies to the ombré hairstyle, where light and dark hair blend together. Unfortunately, this can also quickly become a mess. Moreover, color gradient techniques not only require a lot of maintenance, but the colors also fade quickly. That makes your hair look unkempt after a few weeks. What does work? Soft highlights that compliment your (graying) hair color.

Not too extreme

According to Norris, women over 50 often make the mistake of keeping the same hairstyle for a long time. They’ve found something that has worked for them for years, so why would they change it? “Women in particular are attached to hairstyles that used to look good, but forget that they themselves also change.”

However, both the thickness of your hair and the styles that are ‘hip’ change regularly over the years. It is therefore also advantageous to change your haircut every now and then. “If you change your style every now and then, you look young,” says Norris. If you have had bangs for a long time, let them grow out. If you have a long bob, take a look at the options for short hair. Abdullah adds that it is also best to choose different color shades. According to her, women over 50 benefit most from not too extreme hairstyles in soft tones. But again, try, learn, and do what feels best for you!
