‘The misunderstanding and the hateful reactions have only strengthened her mission even more.’
In a few weeks, Miss Netherlands, Rikkie Kollé, will shine on the stage in El Salvador. But since her win, she has received many hate comments and even death threats. AVROTROS has announced that it is therefore working on a documentary about the trail blazer – from national title to the world stage of Miss Universe.
Intense reactions
The final of Miss Netherlands took place in July. 22-year-old Rikkie was the first trans woman to win this year – something that caused many reactions online. After winning, the newly crowned Miss Netherlands received thousands of hate messages and death threats. Very intense! “I never expected that people would become so obsessed with my win in a negative way,” she told Grazia after the final. “Also because I thought we were much further along in the Netherlands. I thought we were more inclusive. Unfortunately I was wrong about that.”
Own documentary
We can see what this period was like for her in the documentary that AVROTROS and director Jesse Bleekemolen are currently working on. “Fortunately, the misunderstanding and hate reactions have only strengthened her mission even more: being an example for young trans people and normalizing gender diversity,” reads the short explanation of the film. “In The Most Beautiful Woman in the Netherlands we follow Rikkie on her way to the world stage in El Salvador where she makes a bid for the title of Miss Universe.”

Jesse has been following Rikkie in recent months during her preparations for the Miss Universe pageant. The documentary will be called The Most Beautiful Woman in the Netherlands and will be shown on NPO 3 on December 21 at 9:25 PM.
On to El Salvador
Yesterday the time had come and Miss Netherlands left for El Salvador. The Miss Universe pageant will take place on November 18. The director will also travel to the country next week to follow Rikkie closely. He previously made the critically acclaimed documentary about Bibian Mentel for Videoland. We are curious about the end result and of course wish Rikkie the best of luck in El Salvador!
