It is old news that relations between Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle and the rest of the British royal family are not going smoothly. However, the uncomfortable situation that has now arisen because of – yes, you’re not making it up – an Instagram post made us blink twice today.
American Riviera Orchard
No one will have noticed the launch of Duchess Megan Markle’s new lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard last month. We had to wait a long time for it, and the first product also turned out to be a limited edition product for Meghan’s inner circle. On Instagram we saw designer and friend Tracy Robbins teasing photos of jars of jam from the ducal brand. We eagerly await the Duchess to launch more products. Now today our jaws dropped when we saw that on the other side of the ocean, Buckingham Palace is promoting a very specific product from their gift shop.
Royal Collection Shop
In the physical stores and webshop called Royal Collection Shop, gifts and souvenirs from Buckingham Palace are for sale. Unique, a delicious cup of real English tea made from the same type of leaves as the Queen once made. The shop has more typical British royal merchandise available with which you can organize a beautiful high tea. Beautiful teapots with matching cups, many types of chocolate and… jam. Is this ringing a bell yet?

Questionable choice
A video promoting the Royal Collection Shop’s jam is now appearing on Instagram, and the timing is special, to say the least. And it’s not just us who have noticed, because loyal followers of both camps give their unvarnished opinion about the debacle. In the caption of the post, followers are asked to let us know in the comments how they prefer to eat their jam. However, instead of answering this question, it is overflowing with assumptions that Buckingham Palace is taking a swipe at Meghan’s recently launched brand in this way.
A look at the collection of the Royal Collection Shop shows us that the range is quite large. It doesn’t stop at complete high tea equipment. Jewelry, books and even miniature versions of the palaces are all available. It does not seem to be the case that there is nothing else to promote. On the other hand, does the fact that Meghan launched a jam mean this is now harbinger of territory for everyone else, including the British royal family? Whatever the fork, jam will now have a slightly strange aftertaste.
