Royals and the magic of the red sole

Do you see a royal with red soles? Then there is a good chance that she is wearing shoes from Christian Louboutin. In this blog, our shoe blogger Linda van Deventer will tell you about the magic of the French designer.

Christian Louboutin opened his first store in Paris in 1991. Before the start of his shoe label
Christian worked for many years as a shoe designer at well-known fashion houses and
shoe brands such as Charles Jourdan, Roger Vivier, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Maud Frizon.
Almost every fashion lover will recognize the very feminine shoes from Christian Louboutin
because of the red sole. The French designer likes very high heels and wants women’s legs
make it look as long as possible with his designs.

About comfort, he once said, “People say I’m the king of painful shoes. I don’t want to make painful shoes, but it’s not my job to create something comfortable. I try to make high heels as comfortable as possible, but my priority is design, beauty and sexiness. I’m not against it, but comfort is not my focus.”

Do you know
Although the red sole is the signature of Louboutin shoes, the idea comes from the red sole,
inspired by red nail polish, by none other than our Dutch shoe artist Jan
Jansen. In the 1970s he was the first designer to market shoes with a red sole
but he forgot to apply for a patent for it. Louboutin made the red sole
subsequently known and trademarked in the 1990s. Louboutin complains every
shoe manufacturer who also puts red soles on his shoes, except for Jan Jansen: because he
was the first designer ever to provide shoes with a red sole, he has one
exceptional position.

Christian Louboutin and royals
Louboutins have been popular with the royals since the beginning. Princess Caroline of Monaco was even the
very first customer in the Christian Louboutin store. Our queen also has several pairs
standing in her shoe closet with red soles.

Apparently the sole is quite smooth, because Máxima’s shoes are scratched on the bottom for more grip.

And despite the fact that the designer is best known for his sky-high heels and prefers them
designs, he still has flats in the collection. Our queen is also familiar with this.

The queen has passed on her love for high heels to her daughters, her Louboutins too?

But our royals are certainly not the only ones with Louboutins. Mary has no fewer than 16 pairs of Louboutins in her walk-in closet.

Mette Marit is also up for it.

And Rania too, of course.

Yet the brand is not found in the shoe closet of all royals. The red soles are quite striking and
perhaps that’s why it’s too daring for some royals. The story about Catherine is that she sometimes…
received Louboutins from Victoria Beckham as a gift, the shoe designer himself once said this
during an interview. However, no photos of it ever emerged and Victoria Beckham herself has it
never confirmed either. So maybe this story was a PR stunt by Christian Louboutin.
The Louboutin shoes should really suit you. Louboutins are a match with some royals,
not with other royals. In any case, the royals from Monaco are still the shoe designer
faithful, there even seems to be a friendship. This is how Christian Louboutin helped Princess Caroline this year
with the theme and decoration of the Rose Ball.

What do you think: does Louboutin have royal allure or not?

Do you prefer high heels without a red sole? Then you can, for example, go for this cheaper look a like Máxima’s soft pink pumps. For sale at Bijenkorf.

A strap, a high heel (but not too high) and an easy-to-combine color. You can wear these slingbacks from Dune London this spring.

Are you, like Máxima, more into big gestures and amounts? Then you can go for these eye-catchers from Gianvito Rossi.

Fancy a classic with a wink? Or better said: a classic with a heel? Then LK Bennett has something to offer.
