What is going on here?
The Danish family has had a lot to deal with in recent years, and next Sunday there will be the unexpected abdication of Queen Margrethe. No matter how important this day is – Prince Joachim, the brother of future head of state Prince Frederik, will leave his wife and children at home when the throne is changed next Sunday.
At home in Washington
The accession to the throne is of course an important event, but the Danish royal family will still not be complete. The Danish palace announced that Princess Marie and the children will remain in Washington, where the family lives.
A spokesperson said: “Prince Joachim will be present, but the children will go to school. There is no other special reason.” Joachim himself is expected to return to Washington on Monday.
From prince to count
Is there really no reason for the absence of Marie and the children? We’re not so sure about that yet. There has been quite a bit of family tension lately. Last year, Prince Joachim’s four children lost their royal titles on the orders of Queen Margrethe. They now ‘only’ go through life with grave titles.
And this decision was not well received. Both Prince Joachim, his wife and his ex-wife reacted shocked in the press. Things are said to have been settled by now, but we wouldn’t be surprised if there was still some tension in the air.
Change of throne
Whatever the reason, Marie and the children will not appear at Sunday’s enthronement. It’s a shame, of course, but at least they won’t have to miss a grand celebration. As we recently said, there is no extensive royal spectacle planned. The change itself was completed within fifteen minutes!
On January 15, there will be another meeting of the Danish parliament in the morning, which will be attended by the new royal couple and other members of the royal family. And on January 21, the occasion will conclude with a celebration service in Aarhus Cathedral. Anyway, Prince Joachim has long since flown back to his Washington family…
