The prince clearly likes his anonymous existence.
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Prince Harry indicated that he is considering applying for an American passport. Nothing wrong with that of course, but if Harry continues this he can say his royal titles au revoir.
American passport
Harry has been living in America with his wife Meghan Markle and their offspring for four years. He clearly likes this anonymous life so much that considering an American passport is not a strange idea for him. However, this can have major consequences. For example, he must take into account that he can then say goodbye to his royal titles.
Official rules require immigrants to the United States to relinquish hereditary titles or noble positions acquired in another country for their new U.S. passport. And that means that Harry can say goodbye to his status as Royal Highness.
Exception
Speaking to Good Morning America, Harry said: “American citizenship is definitely a thought that has crossed my mind. But at the moment that is not a priority for me.”
Whether Harry will consider it in the future is therefore still a big question mark. It is also questionable whether Harry is even aware of the rule that he must surrender his titles with an American passport. However, that does not necessarily have to be the case, as immigration lawyer James L. Leonard Jr. told Page Six: “I can’t think of any other royal person who has ever applied to become an American citizen. I can’t imagine there has ever been such a scenario and I think it will raise a lot of interesting questions. It is therefore a unique problem.”
