Spinach, kale, avocado or even cucumber: we see all kinds of smoothie combinations in the editorial office. Some variants are quite tasty, but are they really that healthy? Or is it all a fable?

Rules and handles
Losing weight and eating healthy is not always easy, we probably all know that. There seem to be all kinds of rules and guidelines involved, while basically it mainly comes down to making responsible choices. One of those responsible choices could be drinking smoothies… or not? What does that actually look like?
Nonsense
Nutritionist Carlo Kool has seen it all and doesn’t like the nonsense surrounding losing weight. In his book Losing weight is shit, he tells you exactly what is correct and what is actually complete nonsense. Green smoothies can really be healthy, but it mainly depends on what kind of smoothie you drink. Carlo: “In the store you can find smoothies that mainly consist of apple juice or orange juice. That’s basically just sugar water with some vitamin C. Not a good choice.”
This is mainly because several (orange) apples are used for one glass. It depends on what kind of oranges you use, but a 250 milliliter glass of juice contains about four to five oranges. You can enjoy a juice (or two) with breakfast, without really noticing it. On the other hand, if you ate all those oranges whole, you would soon be satiated. Because let’s face it: can you eat five oranges in one go without feeling full?
Healthy?
What makes a green smoothie healthy? If you’re not normally a fan of vegetables like zucchini, spinach or kale, smoothies are the perfect way to get a load of veggies in. In combination with fruit and (vegetable) milk, you often no longer even taste the vegetables. Ideal if you are not a vegetable lover! Are you never really full from a smoothie? Then try experimenting with recipes and choose filling ingredients. For example, use almond milk, two handfuls of spinach, a banana and some oatmeal.
Eating and drinking slowly
According to Carlo, it is also important not to down the smoothie in one go. Eating slowly partly ensures that you feel full. Can you drink your green juice in just a few minutes? Then try drinking more slowly, or use a spoon to take a little longer. A golden tip to get the most out of smoothies!
