Harry had already seen some of Meghan’s wedding clothes…
On May 19, 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot. It is tradition that the groom does not get to see the bride’s wedding clothes before the big day arrives. Yet this was a bit different for Harry and Meghan…
Exhibition
A year after their wedding, the wedding clothes they wore on this big day could be admired in the exhibition ‘A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex: Windsor Castle/Palace of Holyroodhouse’. Interested parties could also listen to various audio recordings in which the couple talked about the ins and outs of their royal wedding. Harry and Meghan revealed a special detail regarding the wedding preparations. In short: that did not go entirely according to royal protocol…
Elizabeth’s tiara
Ahead of the wedding, the couple received an invitation from the late Queen Elizabeth to choose a tiara for Meghan from her jewelry collection. “When the tiara for the wedding day came up, I had the honor of choosing this beautiful tiara in Art Deco style myself,” says Meghan. And of course you don’t turn down such an invitation. “It was an incredibly surreal day, as you can imagine.”
Meghan ultimately opted for the well-known diamond-trimmed tiara, which originally belonged to Queen Mary. She says: “I thought it was perfect because it is so clean and simple.”

“It’s every girl’s dream to be able to wear a tiara and, funnily enough, it was the one that suited you best, the one that looked the best without a doubt,” Harry is heard saying to his wife on the recording. But Harry being present for this moment was not entirely according to royal protocol. “I wasn’t supposed to be there, but it was a very sweet and generous gesture from my grandmother.”
Beard
This was not the only time that Harry deviated from tradition regarding his royal wedding. Although the wedding itself was already a much-discussed topic, afterwards – and beforehand – it was also about Prince Harry’s beard. There was quite a commotion when he told his family that he wanted to keep his beard for the wedding. To make this wish come true, he even had to ask permission from Queen E. Fortunately, she understood her grandson’s request and Harry was allowed to marry with a beard. All’s well that ends well!
