The Guardian newspaper even gives the series one out of five stars. “This Diana-obsessed season is the definition of bad writing,” writes one reviewer. The newspaper also finds it ‘horrible’ that Princess Diana returns as a ghost in the series. The BCC gives two stars, but they are not fans. The British broadcaster believes that Diana is imitated too much by Elizabeth Debicki. According to the reviewers, she must have a serious neck cramp to imitate Diana’s look so precisely. They also think that Dominic West is not well cast as Prince Charles.
The Telegraph is also not euphoric about the series. According to them, Diana is so important in the Netflix drama that she dies in the final season, but does not disappear. “She appears like a ghost on the plane home from Paris to comfort a distraught Prince of Wales, and on the sofa at Balmoral to give the Queen friendly PR advice. That may sound like an act of desperation from writer Peter Morgan – well, it is,” the newspaper said.
In America they are slightly more positive, but the enthusiastic reactions are not yet flowing in. According to The Hollywood reporter, the episodes are quite ‘frustrating’. Fortunately, there are also positive reviews, because Variety believes that Netflix is reclaiming its throne with this series. Cheers!
Previous criticism
The series has had its fair share of criticism over the years. In this way, the makers were said to deal very freely with reality, and were mainly looking for sensation – Dame Judi Dench and Sir John Major, among others, stood up for the Windsors and the impact the series had on their image. Not the least names of course, and in the end Netflix provided the program with a small disclaimer, stating that it is a ‘fictional dramatization’.
Writer Peter Morgan himself is not very concerned about the fuss. “All the criticism about The Crown’s attitude towards the royals has been in the run-up to the show’s release. As soon [de show] is released and people look at it – whether it’s Judi Dench or John Major – they immediately fall silent. And I think they’ll probably feel pretty stupid,” he said earlier.
