Not just Harry: this British royal also experimented with drugs

Margaret was anything but a good princess.

We now know that Prince Harry has a penchant for everything that God has forbidden, and he has never made a secret of the fact that he sometimes experimented with drugs in his younger years. Surprisingly enough, he turns out not to be the only British royal.

Controversial royals

From the pranks of Belgian Prince Laurent to the hocus pocus existence of Norwegian Princess Märtha Louise and the spicy adventures of Prince Harry: the stories of controversial royals continue to intrigue us. If we go back in time a bit, Princess Margaret was one of the royals who belonged to that list of ‘black sheep’. Queen Elizabeth’s younger sister was not exactly known as a good princess, and was happy to deviate from the standard royal path. She reportedly had a glass of vodka for breakfast, smoked sixty cigarettes a day and had a turbulent love life.

Love life

That tumultuous love life was not exactly a bed of roses. Margaret fell in love with Captain Peter Townsend in the 1950s. After a secret relationship of two years, her great love for the princess went down on one knee. She immediately accepted the proposal, but her sister did not. Due to the 1772 Royal Marriages Act, Queen Elizabeth could not approve the marriage between the two lovers.

Without mutual love, but under pressure from the royal family, Margaret married society photographer Anthony Armstrong-Jones in the 1960s. After the marriage he was given the title Earl of Snowdon and was also called Lord Snowdon. And this man is said to have been the one who pushed Margaret to use drugs.

Drug packages

A few years after Margaret and Lord Snowdon got married, the first cracks in their marriage began to appear. In the 1970s this seems to have manifested itself in rather absurd behavior from Lord Snowdon. For example, he would leave small packages of drugs containing cocaine and LSD in their apartment for Margeret to find and use. At the very end, he apparently even placed notes with texts such as “why don’t you take all these and do us all in favor” with the drug packages.

Adultery

The fact that the marriage between Margaret and Lord Snowdon was anything but loving was not only evident from the drugs that were exchanged. Lord Snow would cheat frequently (although we must say that Margaret herself was certainly no saint Mary) and make a lot of noise while making love to his mistresses so that his wife would hear. Margaret, in turn, only seemed to find this annoying if the lady in question had a high status. Well: you can say what you want about Queen Elizabeth’s sister, but she was certainly not boring.
