Máxima visits the Everything OK? Support line and speaks to volunteers

The further development into a broad digital platform for young adults with emerging mental complaints was also discussed.

We increasingly see royals committed to mental health, and Máxima may take the cake. Yesterday, the Queen visited the Everything OK? together with Minister Helder of Health, Welfare and Sport. Support line. Here the duo talked to the volunteers involved and a number of young people.

Telephonic support

Young adults who are not feeling well can call the Everything OK? Support line. The volunteers on the other end of the line provide support by telephone and chat. By offering a listening ear and asking questions, they try to help young people take a step in the right direction towards a better situation. The call center is located in Nijmegen and Queen Máxima was received here yesterday.

In conversation

Once they arrived, Máxima talked to the young people about the need for a safe online place where they can go if they suffer from mental problems. Experiences were also shared from the dedicated volunteers. Representatives of various foundations involved in mental health were present at the discussions. The foundations jointly discussed the possibilities for further development into a broad digital platform for young adults with emerging mental complaints.

MINDUS

MIND US, the foundation of which Máxima is honorary chairman, was one of the foundations involved in the conversation. The foundation aims to ensure that young people with psychological problems receive the right attention. And as someone who lost her sister to suicide due to depression, and is the mother of three beautiful daughters who are growing up in a time when speaking about mental issues is becoming increasingly important, Máxima is of course very concerned with everything that has to do with mental well-being.

Speech

From her position as honorary chairman, the queen was allowed to open the UNLimited festival of the Association of Universities of the Netherlands last September. And that included – in addition to lots of waving and a beautiful outfit – of course a speech. The speech that Máxima gave was specifically addressed to young people and students. “The student days. The best time of your life! You hear that so often. And fortunately for many people it is that way. But student life can also be stressful,” the Queen began her speech, as powerful as ever. According to Máxima, students are always ‘on’ and there is no room for them to fail, which she thinks is a very bad thing.

She assured listeners that it is completely normal to feel stressed and insecure from time to time. “How you deal with it is what matters. It is a task for all of us, teachers, educational institutions, the government, parents and students themselves to take the pressure off,” the queen said.
