Bon voyage! What luggage can you take with you when traveling?

Airlines have recently started charging extra for hand luggage that does not fit under the seat. We have made an overview of the rates you pay per top three budget airlines, so that you can travel without worries.

Extra costs when traveling

You are always allowed to take one piece of hand luggage with you, but of course there are rules attached to this. For example, the bag must be able to be tucked under the seat in front of you, and you cannot just use any size. The price of an extra piece of hand luggage also varies per airline. You can spend more money with budget airlines than you would think for your cheap flight. Extra tip: do you want to bring a suitcase? Then book it at the same time as the flight tickets. If you don’t do that and want to pay at the airport, you often spend a lot more money.

1. EasyJet

With EasyJet you can take one small piece of hand luggage with a maximum of 45 x 36 x 20 centimeters including wheels and handles for free. This must fit under the seat. Do you want a large piece of hand luggage, such as a rolling suitcase? That will cost you from €7.99. A piece of luggage up to 15 kilograms costs at least €8.99 and checked luggage of up to 23 kilograms charges the same price, but with a rate of €48 at the baggage drop-off counter. Additional weight for pre-booked hold luggage is also possible, which costs up to €18 per three kilograms. The maximum weight is then 32 kilos.

2. Transavia

You can always take one piece of hand luggage measuring 40 x 30 x 20 centimeters with you for free with Transavia, such as a small backpack or handbag. An additional piece of luggage for the cabin is allowed for a fee, provided it measures a maximum of 55 x 35 x 25 cm. This costs approximately between €10 and €27 each way, depending on the destination. It is very wise to book your extra luggage online, because you will spend a lot more money at the airport. For example, for a 15-kilogram suitcase you pay €22 to €45 online for a single journey, while at the airport it is €60. a piece of checked luggage weighing 20 kilograms costs €27 to €50 online per single journey, but that quickly becomes €70 at the airport.

3. Ryanair

With Ryanair you are allowed a bag that fits under the seat of the row in front of you, and this cannot be more than 40 x 20 x 25 cm. Think of a handbag, laptop bag or backpack. Do you want two pieces of hand luggage? Then it costs between €6 and €36 on the website, but €20 to €38 at the airport. Checked luggage weighing ten kilograms will cost you €11.99 to €29.99 online, and €23.99 to €35.99 at the counter. Would you prefer to take a twenty-kilogram suitcase with you when traveling? Then you will spend between €18.99 and €59.99 per flight when booking, and between €44.99 and €59.99 per flight at the airport.
