Sad but true.
For many, the Christmas period is a time of coziness, love and peace. Yet less pleasant things also happen during the holidays. According to research, people are more likely to cheat during this period.
Especially in the workplace
Clinical psychologist Shahn Baker Sorekli explains in the podcast I’ve Got News For You why a large group of people choose to skate crooked at that time. According to Baker Sorekli, cheating during the festive period mainly occurs among colleagues. That makes sense, because these are people we spend a lot of time with during the week.
“During the year, tension builds up, as if relationships are ‘charging’. In some cases there is also some flirting.” This ensures that a foundation is laid for an emotional connection and physical attraction. Combine that with social occasions where alcohol is served and you have the recipe for infidelity.
Problem of your own
Research from Datingroo also shows that the festive season is a popular time for married people to ‘broaden their horizons’. A total of 1,000 people completed a survey on that topic. In addition, 35% of women and 31% of men indicated that they have cheated during the Christmas period. “When people cheat, in most cases it’s not about their partner – it’s not that they’re not attractive or good enough. It’s about how the cheater feels about his own life,” said Baker Sorekli. “Sometimes people don’t get enough satisfaction from their lives and are overtaken by the monotonous feeling of the past year. This makes them look for something new and exciting.”
Never a solution
Yet Baker Sorekli wants to emphasize that cheating is never an appropriate solution for any problem. Whether you are unhappy with your own life, have gotten very drunk or would like to get rid of your current relationship: cheating is not the way to go. No one wants to be the one who is cheated on by someone else. Especially not during the Christmas period.
