Emotional after a working day: this is what you need to know about Post Work Restraint Collapse

And that’s how you deal with it.

After a busy day at work, it’s wonderful to have some me-time. However, some people can actually collapse when they are at rest. Experts also call this the so-called ‘post work restraint collapse’. And that is precisely why experts explain to Huffpost what exactly it means.

Children and adults

Initially, a similar term – the after school restraint collapse – was only used with children. This term was coined by Andrea Loewen Nair, a parent educator, and arose after children become cranky or cry when they come home after a long day at school.

But besides children, adults can also experience this. This is also called the ‘post work restraint collapse’, in short: PWRC. And to find out more about this, various experts explain to Huffpost what exactly it means and how to deal with it.

Balance

“In our modern world, a lot is asked of us: to excel in our full-time jobs, which often last more than forty hours a week, to have a happy private life, to make time for sufficient exercise, healthy cooking, traveling and the elusive balance between work and private life. pursue,” says Jenny Maenpaa, psychotherapist.

“Work can take a lot out of us when we have to balance all our priorities. At a certain point we no longer have the willpower and energy to keep the peace and we are no longer able to hold everything in,” she continues.

Implications

Nicholette Leanza, psychotherapist, also recognizes this struggle. “When we come home, we feel safe to release our true emotions.” And while anyone can experience this, there are some people who are more at risk, such as managers and people with a high workload.

“This has consequences for people from a so-called ‘disadvantaged group’, who are expected to be able to shift gears during their working days to keep their jobs or guarantee their safety,” explains clinical psychologist Emily Treichler. “It also has a greater impact on neurodiverges, the disabled and those with mental health conditions. And especially when they have to hide these aspects in the workplace.”

This is how you deal with it

“An important step in coping is to validate how you feel at that moment,” Treichler explains. “By just acknowledging, ‘Wow, I really felt pushed beyond my capabilities today and now I’m really exhausted.’ Taking care of yourself means honoring how you feel.”

Leanza adds that you should jump into a self-care mode afterward. “Maybe you need to get out and take a walk in nature, do something fun with a friend or just watch something on TV. Playing calming music or taking a warm bath are also good options.” Maenpaa: “Ultimately the goal here is to feel your feelings and let them go. Reminding yourself that your emotions ebb and flow. It reminds you that all emotions have a time and place.”
