‘All those comments about my appearance have changed my relationship with food’
Sarah Ferguson’s youngest daughter, Princess Eugenie, recently opened up about her life in the spotlight in the British podcast Table Manners. For example, she says that her life in the public eye has given her a very bad relationship with food – referring to the constant comments she received about her appearance.
Commentary
The Table Manners podcast is all about food, family and having a nice conversation. But that conversation was not all roses, as we could hear. The princess spoke candidly about her bad relationship with food, which she has developed over the years through her public appearances. “I’m so tired of reading comments everywhere about what clothes I’m wearing, or being told that I ‘looked tired’. Those are things that stay with you,” said the princess.
“I have certainly suffered consequences from it. I have problems with food. All these comments about my appearance have changed my relationship with food because I feel like I always have to look a certain way. I’ve heard so many times that I looked terrible…”
Bullying
She continues: “I think everyone who is in the spotlight has to deal with that. But in our family that starts at that perfect age of – let’s say, thirteen years old. Just at the moment when you are extra sensitive to such things.” Eugenie explains that at that age you still look like a child with a lot of baby fat. “You’re already being bullied by all the boys anyway, and then suddenly the media comes along.”
To Portugal
The impact of the media made Eugenie decide to move to Portugal with her husband Jack and her two children. “Portugal is a dream for me, because I can go to the supermarket in my sweatpants and with messy hair, for example, without anyone bothering me.”
