Danish royals will soon be making a royal sprint again

This year’s event has a special edge!

King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark have only just returned from their winter sports holiday, when they announce the next event at which they will be present. However, don’t expect tiaras and designer fashion!

Sporty royals

Some royal families have special sporting traditions. Where our Oranges enthusiastically cheer on the top athletes from the stands, the Norwegian crown prince family plays a fanatical game of football every summer in ‘Skaugum Stadium’ (read: on the driveway of the princely residence) for charity, and the Monegasques come every year showing up at the Formula 1 race at the local circuit.

The Danes also have such a tradition: since 2018 they have annually organized the so-called ‘Royal Run’, a major running event through various Danish cities. Then-Crown Prince Frederik started the tradition on the occasion of his 50th birthday, and after the gigantic success of the first edition, it has become an annual sporting spectacle. Among tens of thousands of fanatics, several members of the royal family work up a sweat year after year.

Royal Run 2024

Such a Royal Run will take place again this year. This edition of course has a special edge, because it is the first time that Frederik and Mary will put on their running shoes as king and queen. There is also a special role for the new crown prince, Christian. Danse Kongehus reveals what we can expect via Instagram:

This year the Run will take place again on Whit Monday, Monday May 20, and will pass through five different cities. This is how the Royal Run starts with King Frederik who will (how appropriate) sprint in Fredericia. He will then also work up a sweat in Aarhus and Copenhagen/Frederiksberg. Queen Mary will in turn appear at the start in Kalundborg.

According to the official announcement, Prince Christian will have an ‘even bigger role’ this year: it appears that he will be on the starting blocks solo for the first time at the upcoming Royal Run. It is not the first time that the prince has participated in the big race, but in previous years he had his parents with him. Well, little princes grow up and really have to learn to stand on their own two feet…or uh, run, sorry.
