Journalist and society watcher Ella Vermeulen comments on the world of Hollywood and its surroundings. This time she focuses on the controversy that has flared up in recent weeks at the Spanish court: Jaime del Burgo, the ex-brother-in-law of Queen Letizia, claims that they had a fiery romance.
The Del Burgo Bomb
The Spanish royal family can prepare for tough times now that the row surrounding Queen Letizia does not want to die down. Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano had a full life before she met Felipe. She spent her younger years as a hippie chick, had already married her former teacher and was a nude model for a Cuban painter. Furthermore, her cousin David Rocasolano says in his book Adios princesa that she was pregnant by another man in 2002 when she met the Spanish Crown Prince and secretly had an abortion as her life seemed to be taking a different turn.
And now we have her ex-brother-in-law Jaime Del Burgo, once married to Letizia’s sister Telma, who says he and the current Queen of Spain had a long affair before and after her marriage to the Crown Prince. “From 2002 to 2004 it was a love affair,” he says. “Between 2004 and 2010 we were friends and confidantes. In 2010 and 2011 it was a long-term loving relationship. We were brother-in-law and sister-in-law between 2012 and 2016.”
Jaime claims that in 2011 they planned for Letizia to live in New York after her divorce with Jaime. He says he has proof of everything in a Swiss safe, already told part of the story in the book Letizia and I and is working on an autobiography (“The truth and nothing but the truth”) that he is self-publishing “to avoid plagiarism , copies and leaks”.
Sensation
Whether it’s true or not, Letizia can brace herself, that much is clear. And I feel sorry for her. First she was humiliated for ten years by her wrong father-in-law. King Juan Carlos, himself certainly not free from blemishes and infidelity, never missed an opportunity to put ‘the girl’ as he called her in her place.
She then did her utmost for ten years to not put a foot wrong as queen, to give the monarchy its shine again and to raise two nice daughters. And then such a guy comes out with a sensational story purely for his own gain ‘because everyone needs to know the truth’, in the year that Felipe and Letizia have been married for twenty years.
Royal robot
So far, she has chicly risen above all rumors and there seems to be nothing going on between Felipe and her. However, depending on what photos and other evidence Jaime comes up with, that may no longer be an option. And then I hope that Letizia, who is often accused of being a royal robot, will hit back for the first time in all that time. With a fierce statement, in which she does not duck and dismiss it as a private matter.
She won’t be perfect after this, but who is? Some human traits will only benefit her.
