Oops: Princess Mette-Marit sees Christmas plans fall through

The princess is even missing from the family photo of the Norwegian royals.

The end of the year means that we prepare for a lot of fun, delicious dinners and festivities with friends and family. In addition to all royal obligations, this of course also applies to the royals. Yet the holidays for Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit start with a huge downer.

Christmas days

As with so many royals, the last weeks of the year for the Norwegian royal family are also dominated by the last ceremonies of the year, and all kinds of royal duties that are all about pine trees and togetherness. This morning they shared a sweet family photo, but one person was conspicuously absent.

For example, we see King Harald and Queen Sonja in their good clothes posing on two impressive chairs, with Crown Prince Haakon and son and daughter Sverre Magnus and Ingrid Alexandra behind them. In this cozy scene we of course miss Princess Mette-Marit, but that turns out to be for a very good reason.

Diagnosis

In the caption of the photo, the Norwegian court explains why Mette had to be absent: she is suffering from a Covid infection, and has therefore had to cancel her plans in the run-up to Christmas.

For the same reason, the princess was also absent yesterday from a church service that was dedicated to Norwegian volunteers. Here, Haakon addressed those present, the Crown Prince and his offspring lit candles, and Norwegian singer Knut Anders Sørum provided musical entertainment.

Chronically ill

The Crown Princess naturally wants to take good care of her health, as she is chronically ill. For example, the Crown Princess revealed in 2018 that she suffers from pulmonary fibrosis. That is of course no fun, but on top of that a respiratory infection? That must be a real nightmare.

Last summer, my husband said in a rare interview that Mette’s health was going very well. “She is now in a very good period and has been like that for a long time. That is amazing. And if things don’t go well one day, we have to be able to deal with it well at that moment. Maybe things will get better afterwards. It goes up and down,” says Haakon.

Since this autumn, however, the princess has been suffering from her health more often. For example, her doctor had to take her sick leave for two weeks in mid-September. The Norwegian court then made it clear that this also had to do with her diagnosis.

Hopefully, Her Highness will recover quickly from her corona infection and she can still end the year festively with her family!
